This was the match that many anticipated for months—Fullerton College versus Riverside City College. Both had been top notch competitors in less intense matches, but the time had finally arrived to see who would be the football victor team between the two. Fullerton College looked in great shape as they dominated Riverside City College in a land slide victory in a title game Saturday the 25th of November. Riverside ranked number 2 with a 10-2 record but they were no match for the number 1 Fullerton Hornets.
Fullerton has often been lauded for supreme teamwork on the field. However, Fullerton’s offense played exceptionally amazing Saturday as they have played the last 12 games. This was the game they had been awaiting and the team definitely came to the field prepared. Given Fullerton’s victory, the team will be playing in the state title against the champions of the north on the 9th of December In Sacramento. This event is even more anticipated than their most recent match. The Fullerton Hornets haven’t lost a game all season going into the state title, and they stand a good chance of winning it again for the second time in a row.
Fullerton scored over 10 touchdowns and the Tigers didn’t score 3. It was clear that the Tigers were offended by Fullerton’s full force competitiveness. The disappointment perhaps seeped into their confidence in the game. However, Fullerton’s coach Tim Byrnes was very happy with his boys. He spoke well of their skills and was proud of them. Fullerton’s offense reached over 700 yards in their display of offensive power. Fullerton crushed the competition with the quarterbacks Ladarius Skelton and Johnny Feauto scoring 2 touchdowns a piece! Gerald Hulett the running back rushed for nearly 200 yards, adding 3 touchdowns of his own.
Not only did Fullerton show superb offense plays, but on the defensive end, the Fullerton Hornets were there defending their title. Taj Jones added a touchdown after an interception. Two fumbles of the three they caused turned into touchdowns and the defense gained 8 sacks. Watching this game was intense because there were so many surprise, victorious plays. Defense is a big part of winning. Fullerton was clearly prepared to play exceptionally both offensively and defensively. Coach Byrnes expressed his appreciation for the defense of the Hornets. Amazed at their “A” game that leads to victory every time.
This title match between the Hornets and the Tigers in California has happened before. Last year the two matched up for the same title and the Tigers lost 45-29. This year the Hornets left the Tigers in the dust as they finished them off with the score of 75-16. The scores are perhaps an embarrassment to the Tigers, but to make it to this level of the competition is a victory for both teams. It appears as if the Hornets put in some additional practice and studied their opponents well. In any event, such an intense match has created more followers of the Fullerton Hornets and has perhaps inspired Riverside Tigers to play even harder next year. We look forward to seeing if the Fullerton Hornets will hold the upcoming state title.
